What is the creative economy?

The creative economy encompasses a broad range of artists, cultural nonprofits, and creative businesses that contribute to employment, revenue generation, and overall quality of life. It includes sectors such as visual arts, music, photography, graphic design, marketing, and fashion, as well as non-creative roles within creative firms and creative roles embedded within traditional industries. Taken together, these activities form a complex, interdependent economic system that touches nearly every part of the state’s economy.

In Indiana, this system is demonstrating clear signs of strength and momentum.

At the same time, sustained competitiveness is not guaranteed. Without continued coordination, investment, and policy alignment, Indiana risks falling behind peer states in attracting and retaining creative talent. Leveraging the creative economy as a strategic economic asset requires intentional, statewide collaboration across public, private, nonprofit, and educational sectors.

One of the foundational steps in building that coordination is convening stakeholders around shared challenges and opportunities. This need was a driving force behind the Indiana Creative Economy Summit, produced by Pattern Inc., as a statewide forum for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and alignment.

The 2023 inaugural Summit, convened more than 225 leaders from across Indiana’s creative and economic development landscape. Key areas of discussion included film tax credits, funding mechanisms, collaboration between creative and traditional industries, expanded support systems for creative entrepreneurs, and long-term funding strategies for Indiana’s music sector. Post-event evaluation showed strong engagement, with a majority of participants reporting that the content introduced new concepts and meaningfully advanced their understanding of the creative economy’s role in economic development.

Beyond convenings, Pattern continues to operate as a key ecosystem partner through talent development programs, stakeholder education & convenings and sector-specific initiatives that support creative professionals and organizations across the state.

As the Creative Economy Leadership Alliance advances its work as an independent, statewide professional trade association, it builds on this growing foundation. CELA’s role is to unify stakeholders, elevate research and data, advocate for policy solutions, and ensure that Indiana’s creative economy is recognized, supported, and integrated into broader economic development strategies.
